Smarties Unboxes Imagination and Supports a Healthy Planet With New Packaging Made With Paper

In celebration of World Chocolate Day, Smarties is excited to become the first global confectionery brand to switch to paper packaging

Back to Press releases

Today, Smarties is proud to announce that its main confectionery Canadian product packaging will now be made with paper diverting up to 26 tonnes of plastic from Canadian landfills each year, a key milestone along Nestlé Canada’s journey to make all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025 and to reduce its use of virgin plastics by one third in the same period.

“For over 80 years, Smarties has committed to building a colourful world for future generations by inspiring creativity and encouraging families to Unbox Imagination together,” said Ryan Saunders, Vice President, Confectionery, Nestlé Canada. “Smarties paper packaging is a reflection of Nestlé Canada’s commitment to protect our environment, now and for future generations, and is just one of many steps on our journey to achieve 100 per cent reusable or recyclable packaging globally by 2025.”

New Packaging, Same Iconic Treat

Not only is Smarties paper packaging a meaningful step away from single-use plastics, but also the brand has worked to ensure all the paper used reflects the brand’s commitment to sustainability. The paper used in new Smarties packaging is responsibly sourced and certified by third-party organizations including the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). To make it easy to identify the new Smarties paper packaging, all products proudly say ‘made with paper’ on the front of the packaging, so that families can feel confident knowing they are choosing a product that not only delights the senses, but also does good for the planet.

Though the packaging has undergone an extensive transformation, chocolate-lovers can rest assured that Smarties in all-new sustainable packaging will have the same great taste made with 100 per cent natural colours and flavours, that is sure to spark playful creativity as with previous packaging. The transformation of all Smarties packaging is one of the brand’s 'SMARTIES Initiatives' that aim to support sustainability and enhance the overall product experience.

Unbox Imagination

Smarties believes that imaginative play is the most powerful way to learn, bond and grow.  To inspire family bonding, Smarties has developed a series of delicious family-friendly recipes, offering even more opportunities for Canadian families to Unbox Imagination together.

Reducing Plastic Pollution One Paper Package at a Time
