First ever chocolate and candy wrapper recycling program in Canadian movie theatres

Beginning December 14, 2011, five GTA Cineplex Entertainment (“Cineplex”) (TSX:CGX.UN) theatres will launch the first ever chocolate and candy wrapper recycling program in Canadian movie theatres. Thanks to a partnership with Nestlé Canada and TerraCycle, movie lovers will now be able to recycle their used chocolate and candy wrappers by depositing them into one of the special collection boxes at Cineplex theaters. The TerraCycle, Nestlé Canada and Cineplex partnership will help keep the wrappers out of landfills as Cineplex will send them to TerraCycle to turn them into cool new eco-products. The five participating Cineplex theatre locations include SilverCity Yorkdale Cinemas, Cineplex Odeon Varsity and VIP Cinemas, Scotiabank Theatre Toronto, Cineplex Odeon Queensway Cinemas and SilverCity Richmond Hill Cinemas.

"Nestlé Canada is thrilled to be part of this program, which will enable Canadians to do good while enjoying the things they love, like eating chocolate and going to the movies,” says Gary Batey, Marketing Leader, Confectionery at Nestlé Canada. “Small actions, like upcycling your chocolate bar wrapper instead of throwing it in the trash, can add up to have a positive impact on the environment.”

“Cineplex is very pleased to add this new recycling initiative to the many other recycling programs we already have in place,” said Pat Marshall, Vice President Communications and Investor Relations, Cineplex Entertainment. “Over the past several years, our teams have implemented a variety of programs in-theatre and at our various offices and we are continually looking for ways to continue to be greener.”

“Cineplex and Nestlé Canada are making recycling history,” says TerraCycle Canada, General Manager, Luisa Girotto.  “By setting a new example for what can be recycled and how we can keep so much more waste out of landfills.”

To date, TerraCycle Canada has diverted more than 2 million pieces of non-recyclable packaging from landfills thanks to its twelve waste recycling programs and more than 800,000 people collecting hard-to-recycle packaging nationally.

TerraCycle is celebrating the launch of this program by offering an added bonus to its Nestlé chocolate wrapper Brigade® members. If participants enclose Cineplex Tickets to the chocolate wrappers shipment sent to TerraCycle, an extra 500 bonus points will be awarded to their account. TerraCycle points can be redeemed for cash donations to the charity the participant designated when he/she signed up for the program or assigned to various charitable gifts available in the program.
